John has been a regular contributor to Woodshop News magazine for about thirty years and has written extensively on subjects related to custom woodworking, materials, machinery, running a woodshop, and technology issues in this field including software, CNCs and robotics.
John was awarded a Fellowship in fiction writing by the Arts Council in Wyoming in 2006. He has written for, among others, The New Richmond News, The Irish Farmer's Journal (Ireland), Brides & Your New Home, Today's Woodworker (assistant editor), American How-To, Fine Woodworking, American Woodworker, Popular Woodworking, The Woodworker/Good Woodworking (UK), Woodworker's Journal (editor), and American Woodturner. For the Complete Book of Woodworking (Landauer, 2001), he provided the text and images for the section "Introduction To Wood". He also contributed to the Collins Complete Woodworker, which was published under the imprint of the Smithsonian Institution.
From 2003 until 2022, John was the publisher of Woodezine, a daily blog about new tools, materials and machinery that reached up to 160,000 readers annually.
From 2007 until 2013, John taught furniture design, woodturning, and cabinetmaking at the Black Hills School of Woodworking in Belle Fourche, South Dakota.
